When people talk about animated series and films, the conversation is often dominated by Japanese anime. But over the past decade, China’s animation industry has put out some truly impressive work. Donghua stories are just as rich, and their art styles stand out as much. These stories have worldbuilding that often draws from deep cultural roots. The only problem is that most of them go unnoticed outside their home country.

Donghua as a medium has been evolving fast in recent years, and it is evident in stories like Heaven Official’s Blessing and Fog Hill of Five Elements. Some of these shows deliver top-tier animation with tiny production teams. Others offer quiet, character-driven narratives that do not rely on tropes or formulas. Romance, action, historical fiction and epic fantasy are all depicted in this medium. What they all have in common is that they deserve a bigger spotlight than they have gotten. There is still a long way to go before these donghua get the recognition they deserve. Very few have broken into the mainstream, and many remain undiscovered.
